President-elect Joe Biden has named several key appointments to his health team, including the nomination of Xavier Becerra to the role of Secretary of Health and Human Services. If confirmed, Becerra will be the first Latino to hold the position.
Becerra comes to the Department of Health and Human Services as the 33rd attorney general of California and the first Latino to hold the position in the state. Here, he was a long-time champion of expanding access to healthcare by previously serving as a member of Congress and helping to pass the Affordable Care Act. He also led the defense of the Affordable Care Act in the Supreme Court last month.
