Antonio Conigliaro, an 86-year-old former captain of the Genovese crime family known as “Tony Cakes” and “Tony the Dessert Man,” tragically lost his life last week in Brooklyn. He was fatally struck by a New York City Department of Transportation truck while crossing a street on June 12.
Authorities reported that Antonio Conigliaro, 86, was crossing Dahlgren Place against a “don’t walk” signal in a designated crosswalk when a 31-year-old driver in a Ford F550 truck, turning on a green light, struck him. Conigliaro was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver remained present at the scene, and law enforcement has not made any arrests, according to police statements.
Conigliaro, who spent years in the wholesale cake industry selling confections throughout New York City and operating an Italian ice and gelato stand in Little Italy, was accused by federal prosecutors in 2005 of serving as a soldier in the Genovese crime family.
