Democrat Complaint Against Governor Gianforte Dismissed

Montana’s Commissioner of Political Practices, Chris Gallus, decisively dismissed a complaint on Wednesday alleging misuse of taxpayer funds by Governor Greg Gianforte for his reelection efforts. The complaint, filed by Democratic candidates Ryan Busse and Raph Graybill, accused Gianforte of leveraging state resources through postcards sent to Montana taxpayers to bolster his campaign.

In a meticulous 12-page ruling, Commissioner Gallus affirmed that the postcards, disseminated by the Montana Department of Revenue, constituted legitimate communication related to Gianforte’s official duties. The materials aimed at informing recipients about a property tax rebate initiative signed into law by the governor, potentially granting up to $675 per eligible homeowner. Gallus emphasized that the messaging refrained from advocating for Gianforte’s reelection and cited legal precedents to support his decision.

Following the dismissal, Kaitlin Price, spokesperson for the governor’s office, condemned the complaint as “desperate” and “hyper-partisan,” criticizing its intent to undermine Gianforte’s lawful conduct.

The complaint had also insinuated impropriety in the postcards’ production process, suggesting links to Jake Eaton, a prominent Republican strategist and Gianforte’s campaign manager. However, Commissioner Gallus clarified that the postcards were professionally printed by Alphagraphics of Helena, an independent entity not affiliated with Eaton.

Recent polling data underscores Gianforte’s robust support among Montana voters, maintaining a significant lead over his Democratic challenger. According to a June survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, Gianforte commands 54% of voter support, with Ryan Busse trailing at 33%. Libertarian candidate Kasier Leib polled at 5%, while a segment of respondents remained undecided or favored unspecified alternative candidates.

As the gubernatorial race progresses, Gianforte’s campaign continues to highlight his record on tax relief and economic growth, resonating with voters across the state, while Democrat Busse has focused on attacking Gianforte.
