Governor Greg Gianforte joined staff from Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) Region 7 yesterday to celebrate expanded public access at the Isaac Homestead Wildlife Management Area (WMA).
“As we work to increase public access across the state, we enhance and protect our Montana way of life,” said Gov. Gianforte. “We’ll continue to keep public lands in public hands for hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy for generations to come.”
The Isaac Homestead WMA, originally purchased by FWP in 1969, recently expanded by acquiring a 414-acre parcel, bringing the total to 1,532 acres of native wildlife habitat and cultivated farmland. The Montana Outdoor Legacy Foundation (MOLF) acted as Trust Manager for the Montana Fish and Wildlife Conservation Trust in finalizing the purchase from the Lackman Family.
This acquisition connects the two existing units of the Isaac Homestead WMA and provides the only land-based access to the Yellowstone River, enhancing both public access and wildlife habitat in the area.
During the event, Gov. Gianforte highlighted the hunting opportunities available on the new parcel, joining FWP Region 7 Supervisor Brad Schmitz for a pheasant hunt. “While I didn’t end up with anything today, it’s always great to get out to enjoy our beautiful Montana landscapes,” he remarked.
The expanded WMA ensures free access for hunters, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts, reaffirming the state’s commitment to preserving and enhancing public lands.
