Battered by Helene, Community of Todd celebrates its resiliency and America on July 4

The Todd Liberty Parade might be the funkiest and most trippy Fourth of July event around, a joyful mash-up of a Grateful Dead parking lot scene and an Alice in Wonderland-themed birthday party with a generous sprinkling of fairy dust.

“It’s people expressing themselves in the funniest ways,” said Bill Wacaster of nearby Meat Camp. “Where else are you going to see this?”

Wacaster was wiggling his foot through a horse costume as he spoke. His friend, Stephen Williams of Raleigh, was doing the same.

The two men have been coming to the parade for years. Two years ago, they decided to join in the fun and walk in the parade, which is open to anyone with a sense of whimsy.

“I tell people that this is the best parade in the world. There’s nothing like it,” Williams said.

Started around 2005 by local residents and organized by the Todd Community
