Dog killed by Helena police after allegedly charging at officer

A “large dog” was shot multiple times and killed by a Helena police officer Friday while law enforcement was conducting a vehicle identification number inspection, officials said.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of Washington Street for a vehicle inspection requested by a homeowner. When they arrived, a dog known by responding officers from prior interactions, aggressively charged one of them.

“The officer attempted to retreat from the animal, but as the dog continued its aggressive approach, the officer discharged his duty firearm, striking the dog multiple times,” Helena police officials said in a news release Friday.

Police said the dog was a “big German Shepherd.”
