Costco Posts Strong June Sales as Membership Model Continues to Deliver

Costco Wholesale reported June net sales of $29.24 billion, a 10.6% year-over-year increase for the five-week retail period ending July 5, offering fresh evidence that the warehouse retailer’s distinctive business model continues to hold up well in a choppy consumer environment.

Comparable sales rose 8.8% for the month, with the U.S. segment leading the way at 10%, while Canada gained 3.7% and international markets added 4.7%. E-commerce comparable sales were the standout figure, jumping nearly 21% — a sign that Costco’s digital business is maturing without cannibalizing the in-store experience that remains the foundation of its appeal.

What separates Costco from most retailers is where its profits actually come from. While competitors fight over thin product margins, Costco deliberately prices its merchandise at near-cost levels, accepting low gross margins as a feature rather than a flaw. The real engine is its membership fee business — a recurring revenue stream that carries far higher margins than any individual product on the warehouse floor. That model creates an unusual dynamic where the company’s financial health is less tied to what customers buy and more to whether they keep renewing, year after year. Renewal rates have historically run above 90%, making the membership base one of the more predictable revenue streams in retail.

The company also returns capital to shareholders through a quarterly dividend of $1.47 per share, with the next payment scheduled for Aug. 7 to shareholders of record as of July 24. The payout ratio sits at a conservative 27%, leaving significant room for future increases.

Analyst sentiment on the stock leans positive, with 19 of 36 covering analysts rating it a strong buy and 4 more at moderate buy, against 12 holds and one sell. The consensus mean price target implies upside of roughly 16% from current levels, with the most bullish analyst projecting nearly 39% potential gain from here.
