A little taste of home: Jericho Mountain fire responders take shelter with plenty of amenities

Dozens of yurts, tents and trailers covered a field near the Jericho Mountain fire Thursday, where responders from around the country have set up a camp offering amenities that provide a sense of home.

With roughly 510 active responders to the 493-acre fire, as of June 26, all were located at a camp about 6 miles from the fire equipped with fuel, food, showers and other various supplies. The lightning-caused fire began June 15.

Most responders work for 14 days at a time before taking three days off and possibly being called back to the incident, officials said.

The yurts house different crews working with the team on the fire, like safety, medical, information technology, incident command and more.

Although the camp may be bustling with boots throughout at certain times in the day, it’s stayed fairly close-knit and quiet, and works as a small community.
