U.S. Attorney says Christopher Martinez entered country illegally several times

A Helena man detained by ICE July 1 could not present a Montana driver’s license to law enforcement and was deported multiple times before his latest arrest, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a court filing.

Christopher Martinez, 31 and who was listed in court documents as Christopher Martinez Marvan, was detained by federal agents July 1 following a traffic stop by Helena police for expired registration near the intersection of Billings and Montana avenues. 

U.S. attorneys cited multiple occasions where Martinez, a Mexico national, was detained and deported out of the U.S., in its response filed July 7 to an amended petition for writ of habeas corpus filed by Upper Seven Law attorneys July 3. 

“For example, in 2007, the United States voluntarily returned Martinez on two occasions after he illegally entered the United States. In 2021, law enforcement arrested Martinez four times after he illegally entered the United States,” the U.S.
