Authorities identify man who fatally shot himself in front of law enforcement in Helena

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff and Coroner Leo Dutton identified a Georgia man who fatally shot himself at Pioneer Park in Helena on July 6.

Joseph Brewer, 38, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head that occurred in the presence of Helena Police Department officers, officials said late Wednesday.

According to law enforcement, police were speaking with Brewer, along with other unhoused community members, and informed him he had an outstanding warrant. Brewer drew presumably his own firearm and shot himself. Police said the incident took place in the Anchor Park area, which is next to Pioneer Park.

Dutton said in a coroner’s report, HPD requested the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an investigation.

The coroner’s division withheld the name of the decedent in the early stages of the investigation due to not having made contact with next of kin, who lived in Georgia.
