Seeing the world through the eyes of a child

I’ve been walking several miles a day, and my feet are holding up well, so I resolved to go further on a particularly scenic hike this year.

The Creative Arts Camp at Mimanagish included a hike across the Boulder River into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, with a goal of capturing the natural world by drawing, writing, and/or photography.

Hiking with a 7-year-old awakened my sense of wonder. He and his mom saw things I would have blithely overlooked. Is that a moose track? Look at that pink rock! BUTTERFLY!!! His sharp eye for ripe berries, and his willingness to share, brought delicious joy to our little group in the vanguard.

“With a young boy as tour guide, I see what I’ve missed,” Cathy Barker writes.
