IR wins awards in state newspaper contest

The Helena Independent Record won seven Montana Newspaper Association awards recently.

Held June 20-21 in Butte, the Better Newspaper Contest recognizes journalists, photographers, designers and advertisers at news outlets across the state.

The Independent Record won three first-place awards and three second-place awards and one third place in Division 4, which is the group of newspapers with the most circulation.

Education reporter Sonny Tapia won first place in education writing for his June 3, 2024, story: “‘Mad scientist?’: Townsend middle schooler gets DEQ involved after science fair project presentation.”

The story was about Isaiah Lowry, a Winston boy who uncovered problems with the water at his Townsend school.
