The Wyoming Transportation Commission has awarded a $16.43 million emergency contract to address critical repairs in the westbound Green River Tunnel on Interstate 80, following damage to the tunnel’s lining and lighting systems.
The contract was approved during the Commission’s regular business meeting on July 17, held virtually via Zoom. Casper Electric Inc., a Wyoming-based company headquartered in Casper, will lead the repairs under a fast-tracked timeline aimed at minimizing disruptions to I-80 traffic.
To accelerate the process, the contract includes financial incentives for the contractor to meet key project milestones and reopen normal traffic flow before November 30. Penalties will be imposed for delays beyond that date. In a bid to complete the project swiftly, the contractor is authorized to work 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays.
Work is already underway, as crews begin repairs to the damaged tunnel structure and lighting. The project comes in response to structural issues that have necessitated head-to-head traffic configurations, significantly impacting travel through the high-volume freight corridor.
“This emergency project is vital to restoring full functionality and safety to one of Wyoming’s most critical transportation routes,” the Wyoming Department of Transportation said in a statement. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we move swiftly to complete this work before winter.”
The Green River Tunnel is a key passage along I-80, which serves as a major cross-country freight and travel artery. WYDOT officials say the repairs will not only improve current safety but extend the longevity of the tunnel’s infrastructure.
