Black Hills and Microsoft partner in backup generator upgrade

The Microsoft Data Center outside of Cheyenne is “by far the biggest customer on the grid,” Michelle Patron, Microsoft’s director of sustainability policy explained in a recent post on the Microsoft Green Blog.

“We needed more energy and wanted to use wind power to satisfy our growing demand, but didn’t want the local utility or rate payers to shoulder the cost of this additional investment,” Patron continued.

The tech company has a long term agreement to purchase 50 megawtts of renewable energy certificates from the adjacent Happy Jack and Silver Sage wind farms.
