Rep. John Lewis Has Been Diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer

The office of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) announced on Sunday that the Congressman was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in early December. Lewis had visited the doctor for a routine physical examination.

Lewis, 79, is currently serving his 17th term in the House representing Georgia’s 5th district since 1987. He is known as a civil rights icon for his prolific activism throughout the 1960s.

In his statement below, Lewis said he is fully aware of the fight ahead, but that “recent medical advances” have given him some hope.

Lewis has been a very vocal critic of the President and voted for his impeachment.
