Application Deadline Extended for North Dakota Board of Higher Education Positions

State School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler announced on Friday that the application deadline for two openings on the North Dakota Board of Higher Education has been extended to 5 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday, December 17.

The terms of current board members Casey Ryan and Jeffry Volk expire on June 30, 2025. Volk, an engineer and consultant from West Fargo, is eligible for reappointment after completing his first term. Ryan, a physician and retired hospital administrator from Grand Forks, is finishing his second term and is not eligible for reappointment.

Interested candidates must submit a one-page application along with a resume and up to six letters of reference. Applicants must have resided in North Dakota for at least five years and cannot have been employed or compensated by the North Dakota University System in the past two years.

Applications can be emailed to the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction at dpipa@nd.gov or mailed to 600 E. Boulevard Ave., Dept. 201, Bismarck, ND, 58505.

The governor appoints members of the Board of Higher Education, and Baesler chairs a five-member committee responsible for screening applicants and recommending three candidates to the governor. This committee’s composition is defined by the North Dakota Constitution.

Current Governor Doug Burgum will leave office on December 15, and the new governor’s selections for the Board of Higher Education will need Senate confirmation. The new governor will have until mid-February 2025 to submit nominees to the North Dakota Senate.
