With Memorial Day weekend kicking off the unofficial start of summer, Attorney General Austin Knudsen and the Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) are urging Montanans to drive safely as the state enters the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” — the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when traffic fatalities historically spike.
To prevent tragedies, MHP will be increasing patrols across the state throughout the summer, focusing on stopping impaired and reckless drivers before crashes occur.
“Together, we can ensure everyone can enjoy the summer with their friends and families. Please, be safe on the road this summer,” said Attorney General Knudsen. “Never get behind the wheel intoxicated, follow the speed limit, and always buckle up. It could save your life or the lives of others on the road.”
According to preliminary data, 65 people have died in traffic-related incidents in Montana so far this year — nearly identical to the 66 deaths reported by this time in 2024. However, officials warn that the summer months are consistently the most dangerous on Montana roads.
The good news: fatal crashes involving alcohol and speed have declined. Alcohol-related fatalities are down nearly 30%, and speed-related deaths have dropped 35% compared to last year.
Despite the progress, MHP officials say now is not the time to be complacent.
“You can expect to see more troopers over this holiday weekend and throughout the summer as we work to keep Montana’s roads and highways safe,” said MHP Colonel Kurt Sager. “Too often we see tragic situations because of people not following traffic laws. Have fun this summer, but please be responsible behind the wheel.”
As the summer travel season begins, Montana officials hope increased awareness and enforcement will help save lives on the road.
