South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined a 14-state coalition of Attorneys General supporting a petition aimed at strengthening the integrity of federal elections.
The coalition submitted a letter backing the American First Legal Foundation’s petition to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC). The petition calls on the EAC to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration forms.
“Our democracy is based on free and fair elections, and it is important that only eligible U.S. citizens, who are registered, get to vote,” Attorney General Jackley said. “Proof of citizenship helps protect our elections.”
Other Attorneys General joining the effort represent Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia.
The petition aims to ensure that federal elections are conducted with consistent standards and that voter registration processes include safeguards to verify citizenship, officials said.
