Commerce Awards Tribal Tourism Grants

The Montana Department of Commerce has awarded $100,000 in Tribal Tourism Grant funding to two tribal governments to support tourism infrastructure improvements and economic development efforts.

According to Commerce officials, the funding is part of the state’s Tribal Tourism Grant Program, which supports projects aimed at strengthening local tourism assets and expanding economic opportunities in tribal communities.

“Commerce’s Tribal Tourism Grants support the development and improvement of shovel-ready tourism industry tribal projects such as niche product development, visitor facilities and venue upgrades and construction,” said Marta Bertoglio.

The Blackfeet Nation will receive $50,000 to fund repairs and upgrades to tribally owned campgrounds at multiple locations. The Fort Belknap Indian Community will also receive $50,000 for improvements to the Milk River Indian Days arbor site, including repairs and accessibility upgrades.

State officials said the program is designed to support “shovel-ready” projects that provide long-term benefits and require a 50% matching contribution from participating tribes.

The grant program has funded similar projects in recent years. In 2024, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes received $50,000 for improvements to a vacation rental property on Flathead Lake.

CSKT Planning Director Janet Camel said the funding helped complete critical upgrades, including a new roof, windows, heating system, and improved access to the lakeshore.

Commerce officials said the Tribal Tourism Grant Program is intended to create lasting investments in tribal tourism infrastructure while supporting job creation and economic growth across Montana’s tribal communities.
