Secretary of War Pete Hegseth convened defense and security leaders from 17 countries across the Western Hemisphere this week for the Americas Counter-Cartel Conference, a regional gathering focused on strengthening cooperation against transnational criminal organizations.
The conference brought together defense ministers, senior government officials, and security leaders from across the Americas to discuss coordinated strategies to confront cartel networks and other destabilizing threats operating throughout the region.
Organizers said the meeting reflects President Donald Trump’s commitment to what administration officials describe as a strategy of “peace through strength,” as well as deeper partnerships with neighboring nations to combat organized crime and protect regional stability.
During the conference, participating countries reaffirmed a shared commitment to sovereignty, peace, and security throughout the Western Hemisphere. Officials warned that transnational criminal organizations continue to expand their reach through drug trafficking, human smuggling, and other illicit operations that undermine governments and threaten public safety.
Leaders at the summit pledged to strengthen both bilateral and multilateral cooperation aimed at countering those threats. Discussions focused on expanding coordination in areas including border security, combating narco-terrorism, disrupting trafficking networks, and protecting critical infrastructure from criminal and hostile actors.
Officials also emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in preventing external powers from exploiting instability in the hemisphere. Participants stressed that stronger security partnerships among American nations are essential to counter foreign influence and protect the region’s economic and political independence.
The Department of War said the conference demonstrated the strength of existing alliances and highlighted the growing willingness among Western Hemisphere nations to work together against shared threats.
U.S. officials said they expect the meeting to lead to expanded joint operations, intelligence sharing, and new security initiatives aimed at weakening cartel organizations and improving regional stability.
The United States said it looks forward to continuing work with participating nations to deepen security cooperation and advance what officials described as a safer and more prosperous Western Hemisphere.
