More than 800 FFA members from 27 eastern South Dakota schools gathered in Huron recently for the annual Heartland Classic Career Development Event at the DEX, with NorthWestern Energy among the community partners supporting the day’s competitions and activities.
Hosted by the Wolsey-Wessington FFA Chapter, the event gave students the chance to compete in a range of agriculture-focused contests designed to test technical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and career readiness. Participants evaluated livestock, identified plants, analyzed agricultural records, and completed written examinations across disciplines including dairy cattle evaluation and floriculture.
Career Development Events are a cornerstone of the National FFA Organization and agricultural education broadly, bridging classroom instruction with hands-on, real-world experience. The Heartland Classic draws students, teachers, advisors, and volunteers from across the region each year, and its scale depends heavily on the involvement of local sponsors and community partners.
NorthWestern Energy’s participation helped the event accommodate the large number of students while sustaining the quality of the experience for participants and advisors. Company representatives said the opportunity to invest in youth leadership and agricultural education aligns with NorthWestern’s broader commitment to the communities it serves across South Dakota.
The event was made possible through the combined efforts of school FFA chapters, faculty advisors, volunteers, and organizational sponsors working in coordination with the Wolsey-Wessington chapter as host.
