Governor Greg Gianforte recognized 39 distinguished veterans this week with the 2023 Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation during ceremonies held across Madison, Missoula, Deer Lodge, and Silver Bow counties. Each recipient was awarded a special commemorative flag that had flown over the Montana State Capitol in their honor.
“No one embodies our Montana values and commitment to service better than our veterans,” Governor Gianforte stated. “As I travel the state, it’s my honor to recognize outstanding public servants who’ve dedicated their lives to exemplify an extraordinary life of service to country and community.”
Twin Bridges Ceremony
On Tuesday morning, Governor Gianforte honored U.S. Army veteran Douglas Denson at the Veterans Memorial in Twin Bridges. Joined by over 40 local residents, the governor praised Denson for his service during the Vietnam War, his subsequent career as a teacher and principal, and his role as Fire Chief of the Twin Bridges Fire Department.
Missoula Ceremony
Later that day, the governor traveled to the Missoula County Courthouse to present the commendation to U.S. Marine Corps veteran Richard Reed. Reed was recognized for his over 30 years of service and his ongoing contributions to the community, including volunteering at the Valor House and working with the Missoula Veteran Treatment Court to aid fellow veterans.
Anaconda Ceremony
In Anaconda, Governor Gianforte honored U.S. Army veteran Thomas “Major T” Teasdale at the Vietnam Era Veterans Memorial. With support from over three dozen community members, the governor highlighted Teasdale’s 23 years of military service, including his Purple Heart and Vietnam Service Medal, and his continued commitment to the Anaconda community through efforts to support troubled teens and nursing home residents.
Butte Ceremony
The governor concluded his tour in Butte, where he recognized U.S. Army Vietnam veterans Melvin Kieninger and Daniel Kohr at VFW Post 1448. During the ceremony, Governor Gianforte read letters detailing their military awards and community service. Kieninger, who earned the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Bronze Star, was lauded for his support of fellow veterans. Kohr, a former post commander, was acknowledged for his extensive volunteer work and dedication to fundraising and supporting widows of service members.
The Montana Governor’s Veteran Commendation honors veterans who have not only served their country with distinction but have also made significant contributions to their communities. This year’s recognition follows the commendation of 31 veterans in 2021 and 51 veterans in 2022.
