High school students are invited to register for free mathematics contests taking place on Wednesday, November 6, and Tuesday, November 12, at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman. The exams will be administered in person on campus, with results submitted online and compared against a national competition pool.
The contests, known as the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10 and 12, are hosted by MSU’s College of Education, Health and Human Development’s Science Math Resource Center and developed by the Mathematical Association of America. The AMC series aims to cultivate positive attitudes towards analytical thinking, problem-solving, and advanced mathematics in a friendly and supportive environment.
The AMC 10 exam covers mathematics through grade 10, while the AMC 12 includes topics such as trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excludes calculus. Both exams consist of 25 questions and are to be completed in 75 minutes. They will be offered on both November 6 and November 12.
Students can register for either or both contests, known as Test A (November 6) and Test B (November 12). The tests have the same number of questions, scoring system, and rules of administration, and are designed to be equal in difficulty and topic distribution.
Registration is free for Montana students. Eligibility for AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and under who are under 17½ years old, while AMC 12 is open to students in 12th grade and under who are under 19½ years old. Top national participants will receive invitations to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination and may also earn gift cards for their achievements.
