Former University of Montana President Seth Bodnar is entering the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Montana, setting up what could become one of the state’s most closely watched political contests.
Bodnar, a former Army officer and business leader, is launching his campaign with the support of prominent Democratic figures including former Montana Sen. John Tester and New York Senator Chuck Schumer.
Tester praised Bodnar’s decision to enter the race, describing him as a leader with experience in both the military and private sector who understands the challenges facing Montana communities. Schumer has also signaled strong support, with national Democrats expected to view the race as a key opportunity in the upcoming election cycle.
Bodnar served as president of the University of Montana since 2018, he resigned last month. Before entering higher education leadership, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army, including deployments to Iraq, and later worked in the private sector as a consultant and business executive.
In announcing his candidacy, Bodnar said his campaign will focus on economic opportunity, national security, and strengthening Montana’s rural communities.
Bodnar also has longstanding connections to national Democratic leaders. He has been personally acquainted with former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama for years. In 2015, Bodnar attended the State of the Union address as a guest of Michelle Obama, highlighting a relationship that dates back to his military service and leadership work.
The Montana Senate race has drawn significant attention following the decision by incumbent Sen. Steve Daines not to seek reelection. With the seat now open, candidates from both parties are expected to compete in what could become a high-profile contest with national political implications.
